Brainstorm
The first thing I do when creating any icon is brainstorm on my whiteboard. I draw different concepts for metaphors that I think might work for the icon. Once I find a metaphor that will work, I start drawing out different angles and approaches that will make the icon simple and easy to read.

Mockup
Once I figure out the general idea of an icon I make a mockup. I do this in Adobe Photoshop quickly drawing a rough version of the icon. This helps me get an idea of the colors I want to use as well as the size of the different objects. A design that looks good on my white board can frequently turn out looking awkward in Photoshop, and the mockup stage helps me correct this awkwardness.

Three Dimensional Model
Next, I start the final icon. I use Cinema 4D to model objects in 3D. Using 3D lets me be more flexible when tweaking the icon's angle as well as giving me a great head start on the object's basic shapes and shading.

Render
When I am done with the 3D model I render it into a 2D image file. These renders often look very flat and dull. This is where the final stage comes in.

Touchups
The final thing I do is touch up the rendered image. Renders often look very flat and dull and require a lot of Photoshop touch ups in order to bring them to life. I end up adding lots of small highlights, shadows and small details in order to make sure that the idea behind the icon comes though clearly and with style.
